Pepper Spray History

Research suggests ancient China being the first to use pepper powder as a defense weapon. The Chinese put ground cayenne in rice paper and flung it at the face of their enemies. Japan's police used the "metsubishi," a box used to blow pepper into the eyes.

Developed in the 1960s, pepper spray was first sold under the name Halt Animal Repellent. This was a pepper spray derived from a combination of tear gases & mustard gases used by the military and police forces.

First used by the Postal Service in the 80's as a dog repellent, many soon discovered the effectiveness of defense spray on bears and other vicious animals. In 1987 the FBI endorsed it as an "official chemical agent", but it wasn't until 1991 that more than 3,000 local law enforcement agencies added it as common duty gear.

A pharmacologist of the early 1900‘s, Wilbur Scoville, developed the standard for measuring the power of capsaicin. The Scoville Organoleptic Test was used to determine the temperature of peppers. Scoville conducted research by measuring the ground pepper into a mixture of sugar, water, and alcohol. This is now referred to as an SHU or Scoville Heat Unit.

How is Pepper Spray Made
Pepper Spray is derived from the chili pepper. The active ingredient is capsaicin in pepper spray which is a chemical derived from the fruit of plants in the Capsicum genus, including chilis. This compound (oleoresin capsicum or OC) is then diluted with a percentage of water ranging from 5% to 18% and mixed with propellants (for spraying) and UV dye (for identifying purposes).

Pepper spray usually comes in canisters which are often small enough to be carried in a pocket or purse. However, pepper spray products are now available in a wide variety of applicators.

Pepper Spray Effects
Being an inflammatory, pepper spray’s effects are; immediate painful closing of the eyes, difficulty breathing, runny nose, and severe coughing.

The length of the effects depend on the strength of the pepper spray and the victim, but average full effects last about thirty to forty-five minutes, with minor effects lasting for hours.

Victims may also experience nausea, temporary blindness, and a burning sensations on the affected skin. Normally, these effects will wear off with no permanent damage.

The most effective treatment we have found for the extreme effects pepper spray are; a combination of milk, honey, mild detergent, and baking soda. This will help soothe the area and removes some of the pepper spray chemical.

Baby shampoo may also be used on the skin or hair to expel oily resin which also contains the OC chemical. For the eyes; victims should blink vigorously to encourage tears or use an eye wash, this will help flush some of the irritant.

If you're sprayed, try washing your face using soap, dishwashing liquid or another mild detergent right away. Anything cooling like ice, cold water, or even a fan will provide some relief.

Cold milk is a favorite among professionals, milk is readily availble.

ALWAYS avoid rubbing the affected area, this will prolonging the burning sensation and spread the compound to other areas. Don’t even touch affected areas.

NEVER apply oils or creams! These will trap the capsaicin to the skin and could intensify the pepper spray effects causing burns and blistering.

Emergency response teams have used a non-toxic eyedrop solution of 1:1 water and aluminum hydroxide “Maalox” which helps with pepper spray symptoms.

Police and governmental agencies have stated that acne medicine or wash helps to remove pepper spray from the skin. Then use common over the counter eye flush for pepper spray in the eyes. Some "triple-action" pepper sprays also contain "tear gas", follow the same procedure as for pepper spray.
